Taboo Book Launch – Fully Booked!
One may as well begin, ‘Once Upon a Time…’ Except this is no fairytale.
New Edition Bookshop and Strange Company present Kim Scott’s new novel Taboo, and author Kim Scott in conversation with Sean Gorman.
From the two-time winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award (2000, 2011) comes a work charged with ambition and poetry, brutality and mystery, about a young woman cast into a drama which has been playing for over 200 years.
Taboo tells the story of a group of Noongar people who revisit, for the first time in many decades, a taboo place: the site of a massacre that followed the assassination, by these Noongar’s descendants, of a white man who had stolen a black woman. They come at the invitation of Dan Horton, the elderly owner of the farm on which the massacres unfolded. He hopes that by hosting the group he will cleanse some moral stain on the ground on which he and his family have lived for generations. But the sins of the past will not be so easily expunged.
Taboo is a novel of return, and of healing; of renewal, as well as destruction; and ultimately, of hope as much as despair.
This is a free event, but please let us know if you plan to come. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night.
